RALEIGH HISTORY TROLLEY TOUR

Hidden History of Raleigh

Secret tunnels. Lost landmarks. Forgotten stories hiding in plain sight.

Hidden History goes beyond Raleigh's familiar sights to uncover the people, places and pieces of the city most visitors — and plenty of locals — never knew were there.

Climb aboard The Great Raleigh Trolley with local historian Heather Leah and discover a side of Raleigh you won't find on an ordinary city tour.

 HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT

Raleigh has more stories than you think.

The places we pass every day don't always tell us what used to be there.

Past Hidden History experiences have uncovered underground spaces, remnants of Raleigh's original trolley era, forgotten institutions, vanished neighborhoods and pieces of the city that survived long after their stories disappeared from view.

The route can change as new stories are researched and locations evolve — but the idea stays the same: look closer at Raleigh and discover what's been hiding in plain sight.

01 / BELOW THE SURFACE

Hidden beneath the city

From forgotten underground spaces to pieces of old Raleigh buried beneath today's streets, some of the city's most interesting history is literally below our feet.

02 / LOST LANDMARKS

Places Raleigh left behind

Discover vanished attractions, forgotten gathering places and remnants of the city that once existed where modern Raleigh stands today.

03 / UNTOLD STORIES

History beyond the usual landmarks

Hidden History looks beyond the familiar monuments to the people, communities and institutions whose stories aren't always included on a traditional city tour.

04 / LOOK CLOSER

The clues are still here

Old foundations, forgotten roads, historic structures and traces of Raleigh's original trolley system remain all around us — once you know where to look.

 YOUR GUIDE

History is better when somebody knows where to look.

Great Raleigh Trolley Historian Heather Leah

Hidden History is led by Heather Leah, a fifth-generation Raleighite whose career has been built around uncovering the stories hiding in plain sight.

Heather's work has included Hidden History reporting for WRAL and ABC11/WTVD, local history research, community storytelling and service on Raleigh's Historic Development Commission.

Her approach goes beyond memorized dates and familiar landmarks. Hidden History connects Raleigh's streets and buildings to the people who lived there, the communities that shaped them and the stories that might otherwise disappear.

“The goal isn’t just to show you old places. It’s to help you see Raleigh differently after the tour is over.”
— Heather Leah

Part trolley tour. Part urban exploration.

Hidden History is designed for curious locals, visitors and anyone who has ever driven past an old building and wondered, “What happened there?”

The stories that don't always make the history books.

Hidden History has also explored Raleigh through the stories of communities and institutions that have too often been overlooked.

That includes historically Black communities such as Oberlin Village and Method, the history surrounding St. Agnes Hospital and Latta University, and other people and places whose influence on Raleigh is larger than their footprint on today's map.

The best local history doesn't just explain old buildings. It helps preserve the stories of the people who made the city what it is.
